Last year I had predicted that 2010 was the year of the Tablet – we all know how the tablet space has grown in this year. Similarly, I tried to see what would be the one technology that will be of similar focus in 2011. The answer is that there is no one clear technology – there are 3 of them that I feel will gain traction – which ones are they?
- Mobile Payments. There are quite a few financial organizations who are trying mobile payments to expand the services and channels provided to their customers. Developing Countries are providing opportunities to these organizations to try out their products – look at M-Pesa for instance.
- Web-TV – Google and Apple have started the race to capture the market. Google TV was launched along with SONY few months back. Apple TV was launched much earlier but focus was not so much as it is now. This is truly an interesting place to watch.
- Check-in sites – Foursquare & Gowalla are the two major websites that provide the check-in capabilities. Just like Facebook has been used by Retail websites to increase their sales, next year will see more organizations try to leverage the traffic on these sites. Visa has started the trend – more will follow on similar lines.
